With only two ingredients required to make your hyphy mud you’re only going to be spending $5 – 10~ for a months’ supply vs. upwards of $50 for a generally under-dosed pre-w0rkout supplementy from your local store.

It Kicks In Instantly

If there’s one thing I read prior to trying hyphy mud (and then experienced myself!) is how quickly hyphy mud kicks in.
With over the counter pre-workout supplements I often find myself waiting 30~ minutes for the supplement to kick in, and having to plan my workout time accordingly.

You’ve Probably Got The Ingredients In Your Home Right Now

No need for caffeine pills, citrulline malate or any of the other ingredients needed for the traditional pre-workout supplement recipe I’ve shared, for hyphy mud you’re only going to need a dark carbonated drink and instant coffee – chances are you’ve already got both of these ingredients in your house right now.

Strength Can Be Adjusted To Your Stimulant Tolerance

Get jittery from a small amount of caffeine?
Perhaps you have a high tolerance and often don’t feel much from a traditional pre-workout?

No problems, the amount of soda and instant coffee used in your hyphy mud recipe can be adjusted to your liking, as both under and over stimulation will effect the quality of your workout.
The law of diminishing returns is apparent when it comes to caffeine supplementation… taking too much caffeine will be detrimental to your performance, causing you to become distracted and zoned out – not leading to the quality of workout you want.

Get yourself into the optimal ‘flow state’ by adjusting your ingredient dosages as necessary.

Here’s What You’ll Need To Make Hyphy Mud:

  • 1 cup (don’t use your shaker for this)
  • 1 mixing spoon
  • 1 – 2 heaped teaspoons of instant coffee
  • 200ml of dark soda (Pepsi or Coca Cola will do the trick)

Method:

Place 1 or 2 heaped teaspoons of instant coffee of your choice in the bottom of your cup or glass (amount of coffee dependent on your level of stimulant tolerance).

Top up your glass or cup with dark soda, I find 200ml to be the sweet spot.

Stir your instant coffee and dark soda together.

Get ready to kill your workout!

3 Common Hyphy Mud Making Mistakes:

A quick search on YouTube reveals a ton of guys making hyphy mud wrong – using incorrect ratios, the wrong carbonated drink, ground coffee and overfilling their glass…

Before you make your hyphy mud pre-workout make sure you’ve got the following under control:

You Use Instant Coffee, Not Ground Coffee

Instant coffee will dissolve nicely when stirred into your soda, ground coffee on the other hand will not.
Make sure you’re using instant coffee – regardless of what brand or roast and you’re set. If you’re using ground coffee you’ll find it floats to the top when you’re adding your soda… not dissolving at all.

You Use A Decent Sized Cup

Be prepared for your hyphy mud pre-workout drink to foam and expand when you’re adding the soda to your instant coffee… if you’re filling the glass to the top it’s going to expand and make a mess all over your floor or countertop when you add your soda – to prevent this I recommend using a large mug and only filling your cup half way with soda (ideally around 200ml).

You Sip It Throughout Your Workout, Don’t Drink It All At Once

Hyphy mud kicks in quicker than an over the counter pre-workout supplement, if you’re taking your hyphy mud a sustainable amount of time before your workout and plan on training for a couple of hours chances are you’ll find yourself crashing towards the end of your workout… far from ideal for your workout intensity.

Instead of hammering down your hyphy mud before you start training I recommend sipping on your hyphy mud at the start of your workout – when timed correctly your hyphy mud will see you killing your workout without a crash.
