Do The Work Book Review

Whether you're trying to stick to a cutting diet, paint a portrait or launch a new online business you're going to run into resistance.
Resistance in the form of procrastination, self-doubt, fear and perfectionism... Steven Pressfield's 'Do The Work' was written to help you push beyond these barriers to get it done.

The warrior and the artist live by the same code of necessity, which dictates the battle must be fought anew every day.

My 5 Key Takeaways From Do The Work...

Stay Stupid

"Ignorance and arrogance are the artist and entrepreneur's indispensable allies. She must be clueless enough to have no idea how difficult her enterprise is going to be - and cocky enough to believe she can pull it off anyway.

How do we achieve this state of mind? By staying stupid. By not allowing ourselves to think."

Without equal parts ignorance and arrogance the great achievers of the world likely wouldn't have got very far...

Without them Arnold Schwarzenegger wouldn't have been able to build the most iconic physique.

Without them Mark Zuckerberg wouldn't have been able to create the social empire that is Facebook.

While others overthink things and see them as impossible you should already be chipping away at the 'impossible' goal.

Start At The End

"If you're writing a movie, solve the climax first. If you're opening a restaurant, begin witrh the experience you want the diner t have when she walks in and enjoys a meal. If you're preparing a seduction, determine the state of mind you want the process of romancing to bring your lover to.

Figure out where you want to go; then work backwards from there."

Begin with the problem or challenge at hand then backtrack as if you were a screenwriter.

What needs to happen to resolve it? What is first step you can take today to get it sorted?

Begin to eradicate these issues.

Do Research Now

"Research can be fun. It can be seductive. That's its danger. We need it, we love it. But we can never forget that research can become resistance."

Without research we can go into an endeavor blindly - wasting time, energy and money.
Be it a new diet or a new online business venture, looking at what does work, what doesn't work and the common issues others on the same path as you encounter is paramount.

But once the research is done you've got to get to work.

This is where many guys go wrong, they spend their days doing research, research and more research.
They never start the damn thing because they're looking for every minute detail, they uncover conflicting information and end up in a state of paralysis by analysis.

You Must Leave It All Behind

"You don't get to keep anything when you enter this space. You must check at the door:

  • Your ego
  • Your sense of entitlement
  • Your impatience
  • Your fear
  • Your hope
  • Your anger"

In order to get real work done you must mentally leave everything else behind.
Go in with no expectations and immerse yourself in it.
Zero distractions.
Emerge with a masterpiece.

Do It Again

"From the day I finally finished something, I've never had troub;e finishing anything again.

I always deliver. I always ship."

Once you’ve conquered that one goal take a moment to pat yourself on the back… then get back to it.
By seeing it through from start to finish (and likely conquering adversity along the way!) you will have built some solid momentum. When you’ve got momentum on your side you’ve got to run with it!

Begin working on your next goal, don’t rest on your laurels.

I’m SJ. I’m a fitness enthusiast and published author. I transformed my body from a skinny fat 135lbs with 18% body fat to a solid 192lbs at 8% body fat. I became qualified in a field I was passionate about. I founded several online businesses that allow me to pursue ideas and projects in my life that I am passionate about without having to constantly worry about money. I published several eBooks explaining the training and dieting techniques I used to achieve the body I have today. I learnt a plethora of new information on dieting and fitness by reading and applying what I read, to find out what does work and what doesn’t work, because as I’m sure you’ve noticed the health and fitness industry is full of non-sense claims and BS. I found out what was true and what worked for me and applied that knowledge. And you bet I had fun during the whole process.
