Epsom Salt Bath Benefits (Why You NEED To Use Epsom Salts)
Epsom Salts Can Help You Look Better, Feel Better And Increase Your Energy Levels
High sodium intake, drinking minimal water, lack of exercise and certain medications can cause your body to store an excess of water weight. This water retention, often referred to as bloating can make a HUGE difference in the way your physique looks.
When I’m retaining minimal water weight at 10% body fat my conditioning is far better than when I’m holding excess water at 7%.
In my latest book, F.U. Fat I discuss several methods of reducing water retention… however the one method I’d like to elaborate a bit further on today is the Epsom salt bath weight loss protocol and benefits.
Why Epsom Salts?
- They’re cheap
- They’re great for your overall well-being
- You’ll look leaner
- They’re quick (you should not spend more than 20 minutes in the bath)
- Epsom salt bath weight loss actually works!
Epsom salts draw out excess fluids and toxins from your body in a process known as reverse osmosis, leaving your physique looking leaner and ‘dryer’.
Epsom Salt Bath Weight Loss: Reduce Fluid Retention!
As mentioned above I’m a big advocate of the Epsom salt bath for reducing water weight.
Several weeks before a photoshoot or event I want to look my best for I begin to have a 20 minute Epsom salt bath 3 times per week, increase my water intake and supplement with dandelion root extract.
The process of reverse osmosis achieved by the Epsom salts helps to flush toxins (including heavy metals) from your body as well as the removal of other salt, which in turn reduces water retention.
Stress Reduction
When your body is stressed your magnesium levels deplete and your adrenaline levels increase dramatically… an Epsom salt bath replenishes your supply of magnesium via skin absorption. This may not sound like much of a big deal but magnesium assists in the production of serotonin which is responsible for creating a sense of well-being, happiness and overall relaxation.
High levels of stress can impact all areas of your life – your sleep suffers, your mental focus suffers and your appearance (complexion etc.) also suffers. All of these negative factors of stress can be minimized or even removed via regular use of Epsom salts.
Improved Muscular Recovery
Epsom salt baths improve muscular recovery immensely – aches, pains, inflammation and strains all seem to benefit from time spent in the bath. The evening after a heavy leg workout I always go out of my way to ensure I have an Epsom salt bath as I know the delayed onset muscle soreness will be nowhere near as bad as it would otherwise be if I can spend 20~ minutes in an Epsom bath.
Muscles, nerves and enzymes are all said to function more efficiently after an Epsom salt bath as these salts assist in regulating the electrodes in your body.
Healthier Skin (Detox)
Epsom salts detoxify the body leaving you with healthy, glowing skin.
A number of skin related conditions such as athletes foot, fungus, blackheads, and odours can be removed with the help of Epsom salts!
The aforementioned reduction in stress thanks to the Epsom salts will also play a role in improved skin health.
How Often Should You Use Epsom Salts?
I recommend having an Epsom salt bath 3 times per week for 15 – 20 minutes. If you’ve never had an Epsom salt bath before or you start to feel light-headed be sure to listen to your body and get out sooner (or at least take a brief break then re-assess before going back in).
Supercharge Your Salt Baths
“SJ, is there anything I should add to my epsom salt bath?”
Yes. Essential oils.
Just like with fat burners, protein powders and the like there’s a ton of dodgy multi-level marketing companies out there preaching ridiculously overpriced oils that have very few of the tangible benefits they claim. I stand behind the quality and rock bottom price of NOW Foods supplements and oils, they’re literally 1/10th of the price of those shady companies.
As I take my Epsom salt baths before bed I add in a few drops of lavender oil.
Lavender oil has studies to support benefits for both your brain and the quality of your sleep.
