5 years ago I would’ve scoffed at the thought of essential oils being of any use to me “that’s just another scam by multi-level marketing companies” I thought to myself.
And before I delve into diffusing peppermint oil let it be known that the essential oil industry is very, very similar to the bodybuilding supplement industry… with ‘blends’ of essential oils comprising of an excessive price tag and very little indication of what’s actually in there, topped off with a fancy label, an advertising campaign, endorsements and a catchy name. Sound familiar?
Once again, just like bodybuilding supplements (think whey protein concentrate and creatine monohydrate) there are the basic products (oils) that’ve been extensively studied and proven to work, yet these oils are rarely promoted and discussed as they’re inexpensive and hardly worth pushing by the supplement companies, or in this case essential oil giants.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way…
Over the last couple of years I’ve been using and experimenting with various essential oils, I’ve written several other articles on the benefits of certain oils however I haven’t discussed diffusing peppermint oil – my #1 use/method when it comes to essential oils (and you’ll soon see why).
Diffusion works by distributing essential oil molecules through the air. Once in the air, they are inhaled and come into contact with nerves that send them directly to the brain. This is a quick and safe way of letting essential oils go to work for you (instead of rolling on, rubbing on or orally ingesting).
When diffusing essential oils (we’ll discuss the specific oils shortly!) I add between 3 and 5 drops of the oil I’m planning on diffusing into my diffuser along with a small amount of distilled water.
4 Big Benefits of Diffusing Peppermint Oil
Improves Your Breathing
Menthol and Menthone, two chemical components found within peppermint oil have mucolytic and decogentant actions (read: thins mucus) – aka. they help you breathe much more efficiently. As such before any intense cardio sessions, be it one of my HIIT treadmill incline workouts or a long distance trail run I diffuse peppermint essential oil. I often use a USB diffuser with a few drops of peppermint oil within while commuting to the workout/race in my car.
Increases Your Focus
Instead of loading up on more caffeine later in the day opting for peppermint oil is a far better option (reduces likelihood of adrenal fatigue).
As peppermint oil is a central nervous system stimulant you’ll find it’s able to give you that bit of a pick-me-up that we often require later in the day.
I find my concentration and overall alertness to be boosted when I’m writing/reading in the afternoons with some peppermint oil diffusing on my desk.
Increases Energy/Decreases Fatigue
“The evidence shows that Peppermint oil both increases alertness, and reduces blood pressure. This is not adaptogenesis, nor is it a contradiction; it’s simply that alertness and blood pressure are controlled by different parts of our nervous system, and the same essential oil can be both ‘stimulating’ and ‘depressing’ at the same time, but to different receptor sites or neurochemical pathways.” – Robert Tisserand
Freshens The Air Without Nasty Chemicals
Instead of spraying deodorant or any of the chemical ridden air freshener sprays from your supermarket in your house opt for a chemical free alternative with tons of benefits – diffusing peppermint oil.
Peppermint oil is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.
Hell, it likely works out cheaper too!
How To Use An Essential Oil Diffuser
- Begin by placing 3 – 5 drops of peppermint oil into your diffuser.
- Ensure your diffuser is topped up with adequate water (each diffuser has a unique water level).
- Time to start diffusing! Press the power button on your diffuser.
I recommend starting off with 15 – 30 minutes of diffusing peppermint oil once or twice per day.
Based on the effects and results you notice via diffusing your essential oil your diffusing time can be increased or decreased as necessary.
As of right now I diffuse peppermint oil for 30 minutes in the morning to aid focus and lavender oil for 30 minutes in the evening as part of my night time routine.
I’ve heard of people diffusing for 15 minutes every hour of the day, people diffusing for a 2 hour long stint as well as people diffusing a diluted mixture of essential oils for 24 hours a day!
