What separates those who are successful from those who are not? Is it luck? Is it genetics? Is it an unknown predetermined factor?
Maybe you went to school with someone who is now the CEO of a multimillion dollar company, maybe that skinny guy that joined the gym at the same time as you is now a professional men’s physique competitor…
You grew up with these people, you had the same education, lived in the same neighbourhood, signed up to the gym at the same time, and perhaps were born in the same year. So what enables them to be in that top 1%?
Habits
But specifically…
Positive habits
The good news for you is you can emulate these people, without a doubt in my mind I am confident that you too can acquire the skills and positions you desire!
Successful people are successful because of their habits, these habits are formed by repeating the particular task over and over again until it becomes second nature, the most common consensus is that it takes between 3 – 4 weeks of daily implementation for something to become a habit.
It really is that simple!
First of all, let’s take a look at some of the less favourable habits that are rampant in today’s society…
- Constant sense of entitlement
- Claiming 100% of the credit for any accomplishment (even if they had assistance from others)
- Mentally switching off by constantly watching TV/Movies
- Hoarding information (books, articles, website subscriptions) yet failing to acknowledge and implement.
- Finding happiness in others shortcomings
- Blame others when a plan or action doesn’t go how they intended
- Fearful of change
Does you see any of the above habits within yourself? Your friends?
Think of the most successful person you personally know or have met before, if no one comes to mind then think of one of your role models.
Do you think they got to where they are today by fearing change and what the future holds? Did they get to the high ground in life by sitting back and watching TV all night while finding happiness in the failures of others who are giving it their all to improve the life they live?
The answer is NO.
If you want to be successful you need to reprogram your mind – you need to banish these bad habits and replace them with positive habits, habits that will bring you one step closer to your goals as opposed to one step further away.
Through reading many books and interacting with people who are successful in a particular field (regardless of what it is!) there are several habits that are constantly brought up, such as…
Successful people give others credit where it is due
Successful people read every single day
Successful people discuss their ideas
Successful people have a list of projects to work on
Successful people accept responsibility for their failures as they learn from them
Successful people keep a to-do list and journal up to date
Successful people set goals and plans
Successful people are always learning
Successful people exercise daily
I can guarantee you that if you implement and follow these habits your life will never be average, you’ll find happiness and joy in the progression as you get smarter, fitter and closer to your goals with every single day that passes.
If you take one thing from this post, let it be this:
Successful people don’t let time pass them by, they are out there creating exactly what they want with the means of hard work and positive habits. Average people have negative habits primarily used to waste time in hope of a better tomorrow.
