Essential oils, you’ve probably heard of them and like me initially, probably dismissed them as an ineffective new age fad.
Over the past year I’ve been testing and using a variety of different individual oils and essential oil blends to figure out what actually does work and what’s rubbish.

Funnily enough it’s a lot like the bodybuilding supplementation world, with ‘blends’ of oils comprising of an excessive price tag and very little indication of what’s actually in there, topped off with a fancy label, an advertising campaign, endorsements and a catchy name.

Once again, just like bodybuilding supplements (think whey protein concentrate and creatine monohydrate) the basics that’ve been used and studied for years, that’ve stood the test of time and that’re very rarely promoted as they’re inexpensive and hardly worth pushing by the supplement, or in this case essential oil giants.

Lavender oil is without a doubt the most common, well known essential oil out there.

You’ll find a hint of lavender oil in many shampoos, soaps, bath bombs, moisturisers etc. it’s a staple in the health and beauty industry.

Diffusing lavender oil via an essential oils diffuser in your bedroom or placing a few drops of lavender oil in your pillow assists in relaxation and relief from anxiety, from my experience this results in a deeper, higher quality sleep without the usual restlessness and wake ups.

Lavender essential oil’s calming aroma makes it the ideal tonic for anxiety and nerve problems. Thus, it is often used as a remedy for headaches, migraines, nervous tension, emotional stress, and depression. Its refreshing scent helps alleviate restlessness and exhaustion while at the same time enhancing mental activity. Because of the essential oil’s well-documented impact on the human body’s autonomic nervous system, it is also used to treat insomnia and as a means to regulate the variability of the heart rate. It can also relive mental anxiety and stress, and improve cognitive function when inhaled.

A study made on elderly participants showed that switching their regular sleep medication to lavender oil placed on their respective pillows produced amazing relaxing effect on the seniors with sleep problems.
